This is my ancestral line back to Switzerland. Nicolaus Ellenberger (1667-1724) came from Switzerland to Friedelsheim in the Palatinate, where my great-great-grandfather Jakob (1800-1879) lived. His son, Daniel Adolf, went to Monsheim, where my grandfather was born. My father was then born in Neustadt an der Haardt (now Neustadt an der Weinstraße), from where he moved to Rosenheim as a child. He then moved with me, as a child, from Munich to Hamburg.

Some people find family trees more helpful. The branching is so extensive that it hardly fits on one page, hence the multiple pages, which you can best view on a computer because you can move the image and zoom in and out using the SCROLL function.

A complex situation of interrelationship exists in the case of the married couple Barbara Ellenberger (sister of Jakob, 1800-1879) and Christian Ellenberger:
Barbara’s parents are Abraham I and Katharina, née Ellenberger.
Christian’s grandparents are Abraham II and Maria, née Ellenberger.
Abraham I’s father is the brother of Abraham II.
Abraham II’s father is Abraham, born in 1705, who is three generations removed from Barbara.
Abraham II is two generations removed from Barbara.
So, there is a degree of inbreeding.

The situation of confusion for the registrar who issued the death certificate of Jakob Ellenberger (1800-1879) was probably this, which he now only laughs about: death record of Jakob Ellenberger (1800-1879)
Jakob’s (1800-1879) parents were Abraham Ellenberger (1766-1831) and Katharina Ellenberger (née Ellenberger!) (c. 1777 to before 1831).

Included in the above interrelationship diagram are the brother of Jakob’s (1800-1879) grandfather, who was also named Abraham and married a Maria (née Ellenberger!), and they had a son Jakob (1759-before 1831), whose son Christian Ellenberger (1787-1832) married the sister of Jakob Ellenberger (1800-1879) – as described above….

Since various other sources clearly state that the names of the parents of the much-respected, long-serving preacher of the Mennonite congregation in Friedelsheim, Jakob Ellenberger (1800-1879), are Abraham and Katharina, it is likely that the registrar who issued his death certificate confused this Jakob (1800-1879) with the Jakob (1759-before 1831) whose parents were Abraham Ellenberger and Maria (née Ellenberger!). The death certificate of Jakob Ellenberger (1800-1879) thus erroneously states that he was descended from Abraham and Maria (née Ellenberger).
